GOOGLE hoopla! NO!! It's Gadget disease!

Well there you have it! Google Releases "The Official Google phone" Nexus One. Sorry Guys, Didn't fall for it.
Thoughts at the moment:
  • Nice looking Device. I think the words they use now is "Sexy". I never did understand why a car or a machine. or a smartphone would have anything to do with "Sexy".
  • Android 2.0.1 Big deal. I'm not seeing a lot of differences in the features between say 1.6 and 2.0.1. There's a kernel change, which is always a good thing. But as far as user experience from everything I've read is not all that different from the G1 or the G2. I'm waiting for HTC to do an "over the air" upgrade to Eclair for the G1. I read something on AndroidSpin that suggested that it may happen. Of course because I'm using a rooted device the chances are I won't get it.
  • The biggest difference is the hardware itself, and like I said, "Nice looking Device".
  • Everyone is already hacking and cracking. Cyanogenmod is are already working on it, and soon enough there will be roms for it as well. I hope Cyanogenmod doesn't forget us. "At some point he surely will". Everybody moves on.
  • Big issue: NO KEYBOARD. I'm sorry guys, but without a keyboard I'm sunk. I'm a linux sysadmin. That virtual stuff just doesn't get it.
The fact is that every 6 months something bigger and better is going to come along. Be happy with what you have enjoy it until it breaks, then start all over again.
I love my G1 and will not trade it. Yeah there's a few bugs but what OS doesn't have them. Microsoft/Linux/Mac have taught us over the years to be happy with our bugs. I'm using the CyanogenMod 4.2.12.2 great ROM on my G1. Yes there are bugs. But at least we know the name behind the ROM.

I guess what I'm saying is; Check the device you own, are you using all the features? Is it missing something? Do you really need the next best thing? The hardware/software vendors are causing a craze that is not necessarily to your benefit. In fact, they are the cause of disease called "Gadget Freak".
Here's a Gadget for you.. ( Yeah I want one too ).

The Ebook Reader:
I have spent the past few days exploring ebook readers. There's a few out there.
Amazon Kindle is out of the question, they have the "apple disease". "If it's on your device we have the right to delete it" Yeah if you have a book not digitally signed by Amazon there's a chance Amazon may delete it. In my language that's "Chutzpa". Plus no memory expansion. What's that all about?
Sony isn't bad, maybe a bit limited.
I was just sent a link to wiki page NookDevs. Yeah you got. it. Nook is the ebook by Barnes & Noble. It's ANDROID!! It's been hacked. There's a thought for you. Nothing is safe.
Maybe I'll post something with some results of my research.

To sum it all up:
There's a ton of gadgets out there, gps, ebook readers, phones, laptops... there's no end. The real questions to be asked are:
  1. How did we get along without all these devices 15 years ago?
  2. Have we allowed ourselves to throw away money on items that are necessary and critical for us to function on a daily basis?
  3. Everyone needs to make those decisions for themselves.
I say take a look at your daily activities and how you manage you time. Do you really need the latest greatest?

Just a though!

The Obama Elections

A friend of mine passed on an interesting piece of information. I'm not sure how reliable it is, but I'll leave that for you to check. I guess the issue is that even if a 50% of the statistics below are correct, WOW what a scary situation the United States is in.

Thought you might want to read this and pass it on:
It does not hurt to read this several times.
Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University School of Law, St. Paul , Minnesota , points out some interesting facts concerning last November's Presidential election:
* Number of States won by: Obama: 19 McCain: 29
* Square miles of land won by: Obama: 580,000 McCain: 2,427,000
Population of counties won by: Obama: 127 million McCain: 143 million
Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Obama: 13.2 McCain: 2.1 Professor Olson adds:
"In aggregate, the map of the territory McCain won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of the country. Obama territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in low income tenements and living off various forms of government welfare..."
Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the "complacency and apathy" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population already having reached the "governmental dependency" phase.
If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal invaders called illegals and they vote, then we can say goodbye to the USA in fewer than five years. If you are in favor of this, then by all means, delete this message. If you are not, then pass this along to help everyone realize just how much is at stake, knowing that apathy is the greatest danger to our freedom.
There's something to think about.
